When Running Hill Head Farm approached us about upgrading the driveway and courtyard at their Saddeworth property with pattern imprinted concrete, we knew this was going to be an incredible transformation.

Not just because of the sweeping driveway entrance that opens up to a large courtyard area. Not just because of the size of area.

No, we knew this new surface was going to transform the look and feel of the farmhouse because of the property type, and because of the stunning views from the courtyard across the Pennines.

An old, tired, grey tarmac

That was what the homeowners were dealing with. Nothing wrong per se – but the tarmac was starting to wear in various places and just didn’t match the character of the farm property.

It looked old and tired – not what the homeowners wanted the impression to be when you arrive.

Designing the integrated look

Our expert designer Claire visited the property to measure up and talk to the homeowners about the look they wanted to achieve. Together, we created a design for almost 500m2 of pattern imprinted concrete.

The challenge with that kind of space is breaking up the areas so it doesn’t just look one big area. But equally, you also need to make sure there’s a nice flow throughout and around the property, and that any different prints or colours work together.

We talked about several ideas for the property, and settled on Old English Cobblestone for the driveway approach and the courtyard, but with a change of pattern direction to distinguish the courtyard area. To give the area the spacious, open feeling in line with the countryside views, we opted for no borders.

Around the lamp feature and side of the house, we opted for a modern looking Yorkstone pattern that complements the Old English well.

The homeowners picked a Bideford Buff colour throughout, with a chocolate and mahogany release to highlight key areas.

Installing the pattern imprinted courtyard

We started with the courtyard area, strategically bringing in concrete for what amounted to a huge pour!

Our team then set about printing the required pattern, before changing direction for the driveway.

The finished look – and the stunning views

After several days on the job – helped by a warm, dry summer! – when all the concrete was poured, coloured, printed and sealed, the results were incredible.

From a worn, tired, uninspiring grey tarmac – to this gorgeous cobble and yorkstone effect that brings the character of the farmhouse to life and offers the perfect platform for views out across the moors.

And of course, it’s highly practical for all the cars and vans at the property!
