Unfortunately, driveways don’t last for ever, and block paving drives especially are prone to wear and tear… as this customer in Ramsbottom knew all too well.
Their block paving driveway was old, areas of it were cracking, the paving was tired and faded, and a few of the blocks were becoming loose and wobbly.
It was unsightly, and they wanted to replace and upgrade it.
They decided they’d love a new tarmac drive.
1. Choosing tarmac to replace block paving
To start the process of upgrading their driveway, our expert designer Claire visited the customer’s home in Ramsbottom to discuss their ideas, preferences and plans. The customer decided they really like the look of a tarmac driveway, how it delivers a clean, simple aesthetic for their home. We agreed, and advised on how best to design and fit the driveway to make sure the tarmac lasted as long as possible.
More on that below.
2. Expanding the driveway in front of the house
Next, we discussed the existing size and shape of the drive. The customer wanted some additional off-road parking space, so we created a new plan for the tarmac drive to sweep right in front of the house.
We brought in our excavators and set to work removing all the old block paving and making sure the driveway base was suitable for the new tarmac. We excavated the small soil area in front of the house too.
3. Adding double row of block paving to picture frame the tarmac
To elevate the look and feel of the new concrete drive – and to make a protective border around the asphalt to help prevent it cracking at the edges in the future – we discussed a block paving ‘picture frame’.
The customer loved the idea and opted for a double border – dark grey blocks around the outside, with silver grey blocks on the inside.
4. Laying the tarmac
With the block border installed and the driveway base all prepped, we were ready to bring in the tarmac to lay across the entire drive. After setting, we completed a final clean up and check, and then the brand new tarmac driveway ready to use.
All told, we installed 62 square metres of tarmac with a double block paved surrounding border, to enhance the overall look.
What a great upgrade on the old block paving driveway!
